On Thursday morning, Cooper and I were getting ready to head to the museum for a playdate with our playgroup. Just like always, Cooper was having his morning snack. While eating his apples (which were cut up into small pieces) and crackers, Cooper started to choke. After a few seconds, he was able to cough up what I thought was all of the apple piece. His breathing was never completely blocked, and he seemed okay. He was talking, and asking for more snack. I noticed that he seemed to be wheezing a little bit, and he continued to cough a little bit. So, I decided to take him to the ER just to be sure. In the back of my mind, I just knew I was being paranoid, and they were going to send us right home saying he was fine. By the time we got to the hospital, he was asking for more snack and talking just like normal. In fact, I actually sat in the parking lot for awhile calling Chad and my mom for advice. Finally, my mom advised me just to go in. So, I did...thank goodness!
After a few chest X-rays, the doctor decided Cooper's lungs looked abnormal and we needed to be transferred to Cooks. So, Cooper and I both had our first ride in an ambulance. (Cooper found this to be awesome, I on the other hand did not.) Meanwhile, Chad was hurrying back from working in South Texas to meet us there.
After more observation and X-rays at Cooks, it was decided that Cooper had a piece of apple inside his lung and would need a bronchoscopy. (They stuck a scope down his throat and into his lung to retrieve the piece of apple that was stuck in there.) They were able to find two extremely tiny pieces of apple. Cooper tolerated the procedure just fine, and was quite fond of his IV, hospital bracelets, gown, and all the other equipment he was hooked up to. A couple of popsicles, endless cups of juice, cartoons galore, mommy and daddy's undivided attention, and a special visit from MiMi and Grandad (They drove all the way here just for the evening to see Cooper. It was so nice to see their caring faces.) seemed to make this whole adventure quite enjoyable for little man. In fact, he threw a fit when it was time to head home the next morning.
What a scary couple of days! We feels SO very blessed and thankful that Cooper is okay, and completely back to normal. And, for awhile at least, applesauce it is!
Who knows, maybe this whole incident has created a future doctor! Thanks for the doctor's kit Grandmommy and PaPa!
Good job momma for taking him in to be seen "just in case" I can't wait to see Cooper when he's big and heading off to medical school!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that was incredibly scary for you. Glad that Cooper enjoyed the experience, though!
ReplyDeleteKatelyn is looking at these pictures with me and she said to tell you that she wants to play with Cooper soon.
